An Animated Alphabet
by Marie Angel  List Price: $12.95 Our Price: $10.36 You Save: $2.59 (20%) Paperback (October 1996)

This is not your average, whitebread alphabet book! Marie Angel is arguably the finest miniaturist to have worked in this century. Her luminous, delicate, and fanciful paintings are executed with the care and skill of a Medieval artisan, but her palette, as well as her figures, are entirely modern. Almost thirty years ago, Marie Angel was commissioned by Philip Hofer of the Houghton Rare Book Library at Harvard University to create a new Animated Alphabet, one that would be comprised of animals Angel knew and loved (and her knowledge of animals, as well as of flowers, is both prodigious and entirely eclectic). Harvard published her results in a small, utterly delightful booklet, but printed the illustrations only in black-and-white.

Now, for the first time, this phenomenal alphabet has been reproduced as it should be: in full color. Here are all twenty-eight drawings (every letter, plus title and colophon pages), slightly larger than actual size in 300 line screen, and printed on a paper nearly as sensuous as the vellum on which the originals were painted. This is a jewel not only for collectors of alphabet books by for anyone who appreciates the genius of a master doing what she loves best.

Color Decoration Illumination in CalligraphyColor Decoration & Illumination in Calligraphy : Techniques and Projects by Margaret Morgan  - 96 pages Dover edition (February 1997)
Amazon Review: Lovely how-to on adding illumination to calligraphy  In the under $15 range of books regarding the methods of illumination, this little book can't be beat--and it is better then a number of how-to's priced over $15. The book offers a historical survey of illumination, an introduction to materials, 5 projects small enough to be non-intimidating to beginners (without being too simple for those with experience), and a gallery of modern calligraphy. The book is lavishly illustrated with color photos, and is written in a friendly manner--no difficult jargon here. There is a small glossary for those bits of calligraphy terminology that can't be avoided.  The emphasis of the book is on modern usage; if you are looking for a book regarding historical method, you may be a bit disappointed. The "historical" calligraphic hands are all modern adaptations, as are the techniques and projects. On the other hand, if you want a lovely book to assist you in branching into illumination, this is for you.
I do think that the technique section is missing some worthy tips.

It spurred me to creativivity  This is one of those rare instruction books that gives you the feeling of sitting in a private class; just you and the teacher discussing the nuances of the craft. It is full of not just side note tips, which are extremely helpful, but all kinds of personal guidance. The one that comes immediately to mind is when the author is talking about drawing roughs. She encourages you to doodle and experiment since no one will see this stage of your finished piece. She even goes so far as to let in in on the little secrets of the creative process; even professionals get butterflies just before the work is done. Besides these wonderful additions, this book is clear and thorough in its instruction. If you are intimidated by the beauty of the penned word, this book is your guiding hand.
